Beaches are why most people first come to Cape Verde — but they vary far more than the brochures suggest, from resort strands to wild empty sand and volcanic black.
Sal — the classic beach island
Santa Maria on Sal is the postcard: a long ribbon of white sand with warm, mostly swimmable water, watersports and beach bars. It’s the safest starting point for a first beach holiday.
Boa Vista — wide, wild and empty
Boa Vista has some of the biggest, emptiest beaches in the Atlantic, backed by dunes. Stunning to walk — but some have strong currents, so check before swimming.
São Vicente — city beach and character
Laginha beach sits right in Mindelo, an easy, lively town beach that pairs perfectly with the island’s music scene.
Fogo — black volcanic sand
Fogo’s beaches are black volcanic sand — not for a classic sunbathing holiday, but unforgettable next to the island’s dramatic landscapes.
