Why visit Fogo

Fogo — “fire” — is one island and one enormous volcano. Pico do Fogo rises to 2,829 m, the highest point in Cape Verde, and its last eruption in 2014–2015 buried part of the crater-floor village. The result is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Atlantic: black lava fields, a caldera you can sleep inside, and vines and coffee grown in volcanic soil. It suits adventurous, independent travellers over beach-seekers.

Top things to do

• Climb Pico do Fogo — a demanding but non-technical hike to the summit, done early with a local guide; the scree descent is a highlight in itself.
• Chã das Caldeiras — the village on the crater floor, where residents rebuilt after the eruption and make the island’s famous Chã wine.
• Fogo wine and coffee — taste both at source in the caldera.
• São Filipe — the handsome main town of colonial sobrado houses, perched above black-sand beaches.

Where to stay

• Chã das Caldeiras — simple guesthouses inside the crater, closest to the summit trailhead and the full volcanic experience.
• São Filipe — more comfortable, with restaurants and sea views.

Getting there and around

São Filipe Airport (SFL) takes domestic flights, mostly via Santiago. From São Filipe, shared aluguers and hired 4x4s climb to Chã das Caldeiras. A local guide is essential for the summit — arrange one in the village. Neighbouring Brava is reached by ferry from Fogo.

Who should skip Fogo

This is not a beach or resort island, and the altitude and rough roads make it hard work for families with small children. If you want easy comfort and sand, choose Sal or Boa Vista. If you want an active, volcanic adventure, Fogo is unforgettable — pair it with Santiago on our 10-day itinerary.
