São Vicente

Mindelo — the cultural and musical heart of the islands

São Vicente is small but punches far above its weight thanks to Mindelo, the country’s cultural capital and the home town of singer Cesária Évora. It is the best island for live music and nightlife, and the natural gateway to Santo Antão.

Why visit São Vicente

São Vicente is small and largely barren, yet it holds the cultural heart of the whole country: Mindelo. This harbour town, wrapped around a natural bay, is the home of morna and of the late Cesária Évora, and it hums with music, colour and an easy cosmopolitan energy the other islands don’t have. It is also the launch point for Santo Antão, making it the perfect first half of a music-and-mountains trip.

Top things to do

  • Wander Mindelo — the colourful colonial centre, the Torre de Belém replica, the floating fish market and the buzzing bars around Rua de Lisboa.
  • Live music — Mindelo is the best place in Cape Verde to hear morna and coladeira in small, unpretentious venues.
  • Laginha beach — a city beach right in town, good for a swim between sightseeing.
  • Monte Verde — drive up the island’s green peak for panoramic views.
  • Carnival (February) — Mindelo throws Cape Verde’s biggest, most flamboyant Carnival. In August, the Baía das Gatas music festival draws crowds.

Where to stay

  • Mindelo — stay in or near the centre; almost everything is walkable, from music venues to the ferry terminal for Santo Antão.

Getting there and around

Cesária Évora Airport (VXE) handles domestic flights and some regional connections; many visitors arrive on a short hop from Sal or Santiago. Central Mindelo is walkable, with taxis for longer trips. The ferry to Porto Novo (Santo Antão) leaves from the town’s harbour.

Who should skip São Vicente

If your priority is guaranteed hot, dry beach weather and a big all-inclusive resort, this isn’t the island — go to Sal or Boa Vista. But if you care about culture, music and atmosphere, few places in the Atlantic match Mindelo. It’s also where goalkeeper Vozinha is from.
